2024 January Sale: How to get the most from online lessons

(This is a follow up to ‘2024 January Sale: Why 1-1 lessons with a native speaker?, 2024 January Sale: Questions about buying online lessons‘, 2024 January Sale: Getting started with your online lessons‘ and 2024 January Sale: Who will my online teacher be?

OK, so you’re learning Italian, French, Spanish or German and have decided to give one-to-one online lessons a try! Well done!

We’ve been teaching online for many years, and many of us are also language learners, so experience things from the students’ perspective, too. Below are some of our tips about what to expect and how to get the most out of your online lessons.

What to expect

If you’ve never done this before, it’s absolutely normal to be nervous. Even terrified! Like before a job interview, or a first date, meeting someone new and interacting with them in a way which might be unfamiliar, well, of course you’ll be anxious! Teachers get nervous too, before meeting with new students. It makes no difference if it’s online or offline really (except… see below) But teachers do this sort of thing often, as part of their job, so it’s reasonable for you – the student – to expect them to take the initiative and to try to put you at your ease.

Then there’s the fact that the teacher will be speaking to you in the language you’re learning, and expect you to reply in the same way, as far as you’re able. That’s also VERY SCARY, right? And yet, the teacher is a professional, and will know in advance your approximate level (based on what you have told our teaching admin team in response to the questionnaire they sent you). S/he won’t expect too much of you, and certainly not the first time out. So be gentle with yourself. When beginning, it’s normal that you might at times feel tongue-tied and frustrated. It helps me to remember that the teacher her/himself might be no genius at foreign languages, either. It’s the student that has the difficult part, right?

Expect the teacher to be online punctually (unless  they’re Italian, in which case a minute or two late counts as punctual), using the medium (Skype, Zoom) that you have agreed together. It’s a good idea if you’re ready, too. Whether teaching or learning, I’m always online a few minutes before – computer on, Skype started, speakers and microphone adjusted, appropriate keyboard language selected, dictionary handy, etc. That sounds like a lot, but it’s just like getting yourself into a physical classroom with your notepad, pen, course book, smartphone and water bottle,  while also remembering your reading glasses, adjusting your hearing aid (if you have one), and so on. The point is that prepared students will be ready to do their part at the appointed hour, and so get the full value from the time they’ve paid for.

N.b. If you’ve never done this before, tell your teacher in advance, and perhaps ask to begin a few minutes early, so you can verify that everything is working. It’s in the teacher’s interest that everything goes smoothy, remember. And/or ask a friend or family member to help you set things up, and maybe to do a test video call with you, so you’ll know what to expect. Like life, online lessons can be confusing, but that’s a lot worse if you aren’t expecting it and haven’t made any effort to prepare.

Expect the teacher to want to find out a little about you, so to want to chat a little, to ask you questions, such as why you’re learning, what other learning activities you do, what your level is, what materials or apps you use, and so on. There’s nothing to stop you asking questions in return. Find out where the teacher is, whether this is their primary job, what else they do in life, what languages they know, and so on. Show an interest! It’s a great way to form a positve relationship with someone new. And if you don’t know how to ask questions, hopefully you will do soon!

Expect the teacher to have some clear idea of how to proceed with the first lesson, even if you don’t. The best ones will be totally flexible, so that you may not even realise that what occurs is what they were expecting to happen, or how well that might be working for you. Less-experienced teachers (we all start that way) may have a lesson planned, hopefully something appropriate, and feel less confident about deviating from it. In that case, don’t hesitate to give feedback, perhaps in an email later: I liked this and that, I didn’t find this and that very helpful, I’d prefer to do more of this and that.

It’s in both your interest and the teacher’s that the two of you find the ‘right path’ for your lessons, the one that maximises your learning and enjoyment. That may take a little trial and error, but it’ll happen faster with your feedback, and with open, friendly communication about your needs and wants.

How to get the most out of your online lessons

Beyond the various points mentioned above, I’d offer these suggestions:

1.) ‘Warm up’ first. I try to listen to the languages I’m learning every day, but don’t always manage it. On a day when I have a lesson, though, and so am expected to speak and understand, I ALWAYS listen to something first (the news headlines, for instance), to get the ‘foreign languages module’ in my brain switched on and ready to do its stuff. NOT doing this means it comes as a shock when the lesson starts, and getting up to steam might take a little longer. If listening to the language you’re learning (even in the car, etc.) isn’t an option, try scanning the front page of a newspaper. It doesn’t take a lot to get that ‘foreign languages module’ booted up and raring to go!

2.) Review. If you got notes from a previous lesson, find a minute or two to read through them before you start the next one. It has a similar effect to 1.) above. If there are lots of new words in the notes, don’t beat yourself up if you didn’t memorise or remember them. But looking at them again will at least remind you of the topic of the previous lesson – perhaps you talked about your job and your family, for instance. Perhaps there’s something else you’d like to say or ask about those topics?

3.) Socialise! At least a little, at the start and at the end. “How are you? Has your husband got over his cold? How was your weekend? What are you going to do for the rest of the day? Do you have more lessons after this one? Where do your other students live?” Unless you have plenty of other opportunities to SPEAK the language you’re learning (and even then), the ‘natural interactions’ with your native speaker teacher are excellent preparation for what you will likely use your foreign language for in the future. And if you don’t feel you can ‘chat’ naturally in your foreign language, well don’t you think that maybe getting to that point should be a priority?

4.) Take control (where necessary). Some of the most useful moments in the many thousands of hours I’ve spent learning foreign languages have been right at the start with a new language, when I would Google how to say things like: “How do I say (English word) in (language I’m learning)?”, “What does (foreign language word) mean?”, “Can you give an example?”, “Can you repeat that, please?” and so on. The point is that even if you know little of your new language, and have zero experience speaking it, you’ll get more out of interactions with a native speaker if you can ‘guide’ what’s happening. Questions you ask, besides being excellent practice for real life interactions, inform your teacher about what’s happening in your head. More importantly, they balance things out in the ‘I’m the teacher/You’re the student’ power imbalance (which some people like, but I don’t enjoy), making it clear that she and you are partners in this process rather than master/slave.

5.) Be clear about your goals! And yet flexible, so as to take advantage of the teacher’s experience and different perspective. Personally, I belive I could learn the grammar of whatever language I study on my own, if I chose to, so rarely bother. What I want from a native speaker teacher is less of the ‘teaching’ and more of the natural interaction. I want to be happily interacting, and for the lessons to feel like a chat with a friend. It’s not that I’d necessarily refuse to work with a teacher on a grammar point she felt was important for me, just that it would need to be kept brief, and be evidently supportive of my primary goal. Of course, you may have entirely different priorities and preferences – some people just love to spend a half hour a week on grammar – but the point is you should be clear to yourself, and to your teacher, what you want.

6.) Don’t expect too much.

A thirty-minute online lesson should, hopefully, pass very quickly. There’s not a lot of time, and certainly not enough for everything you (or the teacher) might want to cram in. But that’s OK! Each lesson is like a step on a journey. The value comes as you progress, and it’s cumulative. You may not notice much difference after just one half-hour interaction (apart from perhaps now feeling reassured, rather than terrified), but after a half-dozen meetings things should be feeling familiar, priorities will become clearer, interactions more predictable. And perhaps six months or a year down the road, other people, and you yourself, might start to observe how ‘well’ you can now speak the language you’re learning. ‘Well’ doesn’t mean perfect, which you’ll probably never be, but more like ‘confident/effective/efficient’, which is quite achievable, with practice and time.

2024 January Sale: Who will my online teacher be?

(This is a follow up to ‘2024 January Sale: Why 1-1 lessons with a native speaker?, 2024 January Sale: Questions about buying online lessons‘, and 2024 January Sale: Getting started with your online lessons

Prospective online students are naturally curious about who their online teacher will be:

Who will my online teacher be?

All our online lesson teachers are professionals who have significant teaching experience and usually speak reasonable English. We interview new teachers online before accepting them, and brief them thoroughly regarding what our clients need and expect. In the unlikely event there is anything (at all) that you’re not happy with, our teaching admin team is your first point of call. Whatever the problem is, they’ll sort it out for you.

Why can’t I choose my own online teacher?

“I’d like to get to know your teachers before I decide to take lessons with you. Why don’t you publish a directory of your teachers with photos and some biographical information, so I can choose?”
We run a successful online teaching businesses precisely because we don’t rely on students to select their teacher from a line-up of the usual suspects. Walk into any professional language school in the world and they will assign you a teacher that they trust to deliver the service you are paying for – entirely without your input on who that should be. That’s their job. In contrast, use an online platform (there are many) and the responsibility is entirely yours.

Does the online teacher speak English?

It’s one of our requirements. But we’d strongly advise you not to use English as the ‘lingua franca’ for your lessons, as that rather defeats the point. Start in Italian (or whichever language you’re learning), continue the same way. It might feel strange at first, but you’ll soon get used to it.

Changes of online teacher

Our policy is to leave a student with their teacher, especially when they renew, unless students themselves request a change (which is fine!) But we can’t guarantee that the teacher will always remain the same – sometimes switching teachers may be unavoidable. As with any language school, teaching staff come and go. Younger teachers may be offered their dream job elsewhere, others may have to reduce their commitments for family or other reasons. When that happens we will let you know when and why the change will take place,  and put you in contact with your new teacher. Our teaching management team will be available to help smooth the transition, if necessary.

What if it’s the student that wants to change teacher?

That’s fine. Just let our teaching admin team know and they can organise that for you.

Can I work with multiple teachers at the same time?

If you think that would be helpful, why not? Let the teaching admin team know your preferences.

2024 January Sale: Getting started with your online lessons

(This is a follow up to ‘2024 January Sale: Why 1-1 lessons with a native speaker? and 2024 January Sale: Questions about buying online lessons‘)

Here are some more things prospective online students need to know:

+++

The ‘teaching admin’ team

The ‘teaching admin’ (Lucia and Stefania) team will email you when you buy lesson credits, to ask about your needs and preferences, and so put you in touch with a suitable online teacher. After that initial contact, student and teacher organise things for themselves UNLESS there’s any sort of problem, in which case, please contact the teaching admin team (teaching@imparareonline.com), who will be happy to help you.

Organisation of online lessons

Teacher and student should arrange, via email, the day/time of lessons and the platform to be used (Skype, Zoom), taking into account time zones and the availability/preferences of both. Both teacher and student should confirm that a lesson has been arranged for a particular day/time, or the lesson is NOT confirmed.

Who decides the lesson content?

Normally, you do. Your lessons can include conversation, grammar, a mix, whatever you prefer. If you aren’t sure, ask your teacher for suggestions. She/he will be happy to advise you, or simply decide for you what you need. Lesson content should be agreed between teacher and student, either a general direction/preference discussed at the beginning of the course of lessons, then occasionally thereafter, or time by time. Do you want just conversation? Grammar input? Correction of mistakes? Help with pronunciation? Preparation for an exam? Homework? Something else? The teacher should ask, and the student should communicate whether lesson content is appropriate, and any change in their requirements.

Check your email account’s Spam/Junk folders!

By far the most common problem organising online lessons is that emails – from the teacher or from the ‘teaching admin’ team – end up in a student’s Spam/Junk folder, so are not seen. If you’re expecting an email (for instance, after buying lesson credits, or in response to a request for help), please start by checking the Spam/Junk folder in your email account. Occasionally your teacher or the teaching admin team might forget to email you, or assume that no reply is required. Much more often, they reply professionally and punctually but their reply is not seen.

Why are lessons just 30 minutes long?

As teachers, we think that, while a one-hour individual lesson is ideal when face-to-face in a classroom, an hour online can be heavy, especially when you’re just starting out. So we offer a default of 30 minutes instead. If you’d rather have a longer session, just book two lessons to run one after another. The price of two half-hour lessons is comparable with one full-hour session offered by other quality schools, but offers you more flexibility.

What days/times can I take lessons?

We know there may be a big time difference between where our teachers are and where you live. For this reason we look for teachers who are willing to teach early in the morning or late at night rather than only during office hours. With a little flexibility on both sides, it’s therefore normally possible to accommodate even large time differences. Our ‘teaching admin’ team will ask about your preferred days/times BEFORE assigning you a teacher. Please give them as many options as you can, rather than just one day/one time, and be clear about which time zone you are in!

Do I have to study at a regular day/time?

Nope, it’s flexible. But people do tend to end up having a regular day/time because it just works out like that once lessons become a routine. Not to say you can’t cancel a lesson you’ve booked. Just write to your teacher at least 24 hours in advance to let him/her know.

2024 January Sale: Questions about buying online lessons

(This is a follow up to ‘2024 January Sale: Why 1-1 lessons with a native speaker?  )

We get lots of questions from prospective online students! For instance:

How does buying online lessons work?

It’s not complicated. You simply select the lessons package that you prefer from our catalog and proceed with the payment in the usual ecommerce way. Add the product to your cart, fill in the usual information, select a payment method (see below), check and authorise the payment.

When we are notified of your order, our teaching management team will get a copy (it could take a few hours for them to see it, depending on the time zone). They will then email you to find out what your needs are, and when you would like to take your lessons. When you have responded to their questions, they’ll pass your details to a teacher from our team who has availability at the day/time you prefer. The teacher will then email you to arrange your first lesson.

If you don’t see an email from our teaching management team within, say, 24 hours (should be much sooner, though), please check your email account’s spam/junk folder carefully! Other things can go wrong, but rarely do. The most frequent issue in arranging lessons is the student not noticing emails they have recieved from the teaching management team and/or the assigned teacher.

Payment options

NativeSpeakerTeachers.com currently offers four payment options, so you can select your preferred payment method when you get to the ‘checkout’ page. Do that by clicking on the DARK BLUE DOT, next to the payment method. Payment options are (in the order that you’ll see them on the page):

Credit card / debit card – your card information is protected and processed by the well-known payment processing company Stripe, fronted by our ecommerce shop provider, Woocommerce. This is the most common choice, and always works well. Fees (which are paid by us) are reasonable, and payment security is world class.

Paypal – a popular and reliable payments provider. If you already have a Paypal account, your credit/debit card information should already be safely stored, so all that’s needed is to authorise the payment.

Amazon Pay – if you have an Amazon account, with a credit/debit card linked to it, they’ll process your order on our behalf, just as if you were ordering physical goods from their site. It’s not the most common choice, but works well, and some of our students prefer it.

Direct Bank Transfer – (SUITABLE ONLY FOR CUSTOMERS WITH A UK BANK ACCOUNT) if you have a UK bank account, are comfortable using home banking, and don’t mind typing in the account name, account number and sort code, select this payment method (otherwise, use a credit/debit card!) Once your order is received you will be redirected to a page with our account information, after which it’s up to you to log into your home banking and do the payment. The shop software will also email our bank details to you. Please use your Order ID number as the payment reference. Obviously, your order won’t be confirmed until the funds have cleared in our account, which can be almost instantly, or take several days, depending on your bank. If you’re in a rush, email us when you’ve made the payment so we’ll know to look out for it. N.B. We do not recommend international bank transfer as a payment option. Fees are unpredictable and can be excessive. Fees charged on international bank transfer payments or for currency conversion are a student’s responsibility. If in doubt, choose the credit/debit card option instead!

Is it safe to input my credit card details in your online shop?

Well, actually  you’ll be sending your details directly to the payment processor you selected (Woocommerce/Stripe x credit / debit card payments, Amazon Pay, or Paypal), and while that may appear to be on our website, it really isn’t! We never get to see your card details, however we’re assured that the security offered by these organisations is the best.

Do you charge VAT/sales tax?

Yes. Our company is based in the UK, and because foreign language lessons are subject to Value Added Tax in Britain, UK VAT of 20% is included in the advertised price of online lessons. You don’t need to add anything on (as is common in the USA, for instance). VAT is already included in all the prices you see.

2024 January Sale: Why 1-1 lessons with a native speaker?

Why take one-to-one lessons online with a native speaker of the language you’re learning?

And why do that through NativeSpeakerTeachers.com?

A foreign language, in the end, is all about communication. Speaking, listening, reading and perhaps writing.

For most people, speaking and listening combined, so actually INTERACTING, is the objective.

People typically want to reach the point when they can chat to a native speaker with a degree of confidence, getting at least some of their ideas across, understanding as much as possible of what’s being said to them, and feeling confident enough to handle moments of difficulty, such as not understanding a critical phrase, or generally getting wires crossed!

Reaching that point isn’t rocket science, though it can feel impossible to many learners. You basically need to practice. To just do it. Obviously, what you can manage in terms of interacting is likely to be limited at first, but repeated contact with a native speaker will quickly lead to you feeling more confident. That’s just the way the human brain works.

In short, competence with a foreign language, to a large extent, is a function of experience using it. If you’ve never interacted, one-to-one, with a native speaker, then it’s no surprise that when you eventually come to do so, no matter how advanced your knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and so on, you’ll feel the pressure!

Some students never get past that lack of practice. They obsess over the details of the language, rather than focusing on DOING THINGS WITH IT. Then freak out when they have to talk or listen. It’s too fast, I don’t have time to think!

Native speakers might not always be the best teachers, nor the cheapest, but interacting with one regularly – I’ve been doing Swedish conversation for half an hour each week, for many years now – is excellent preparation for chatting to other native speakers you may encounter, either when you’re in the country where the language is spoken, or for whatever chance reason.

My Swedish is far from perfect (I never study…) but Swedes I  have occasion to interact with recognise immediately that I’m EXPERIENCED at listening to them (and so they continue in Swedish rather than switching to English), and more or less able to hold up my end of the conversation. They are, usually, quite impressed!

1-1 online lessons can have whatever focus you wish. Grammar, if you insist. Help with things you find difficult. Feedback on errors you make. But those things are also available elsewhere. What you might otherwise be missing is the chance to interact, ideally in as natural a way as possible, and so build those vital  communication skills, and gain experience using them!

Also, if you make an effort to get to know your teacher, to find out about him or her, to learn about where they live, what their interests are, what’s going on in their lives, you’ll be getting a whole different perspective on the language, and on the people who speak it. Course materials can simulate that, but there’s nothing like the real thing, so having a  FRIEND YOU REGULARLY CHAT TO in the language you’re learning.

Why us? Why NativeSpeakerTeachers.com? There are, after all, big learning platforms, language schools, individual freelance teachers, and so on, to choose from.

One good reason is that we don’t offer the hi-tech ‘platform’ experience – where you pick your teacher from a list, having checked their feedback, the cost, and their availability – but instead work as any off-line language school does.

That is to say, you pay for some lessons with us and WE assign you a teacher, someone we have selected as having appropriate skills and experience, know to be available when you need them, and hope will manage to meet your needs (which we ask you about first.)

WE then take responsibility for the ongoing success (or otherwise) of your lessons. If either you or the teacher needs support, we’re here to offer that. Our ‘teaching admin’ team have done that precise job in professional language schools, for years or decades. If you’re not happy with the teacher, we’ll figure out why, then find an alternative.

In effect, NativeSpeakerTeachers.com is an online language school, one which specialises in the one-to-one experience, and has the aim of providing students with the invaluable benefits of interacting regularly with a native speaker of the language they’re learning.

Twice a year, in February and November, we have a free trial lesson offer (but not this week, sorry.) Four times a year we run a coupon-code promotion on lesson credits, usually with a 20% discount on the website prices.

Many of our students wait for the promotions and sign up again and again, building a medium or long term relationship with their native speaker teacher. That’s exactly what we aim for, because it works for the student, for the teacher, and for us.

You’ll find details of the current coupon code promotion below…

November 2023 FREE Online Lesson Offer: 36 hours left!

Here’s a final reminder to snap up your free online Italian/Spanish/French/German lesson, if you haven’t already done so.

There are only about 36 hours remaining of the Free Trial Online Lesson offer at NativeSpeakerTeachers.com. Our promotion ends tomorrow night, 12/11/23.

We do these offers only in November and February, when things are otherwise quiet. So after Sunday, there won’t be another chance for a while!

This week we’ve already given away around a hundred and twenty FREE online lessons, worth £22 each.

But we still have the capacity and budget for a few more, so if you’d like to try an online lesson (via Skype or Zoom) with a native-speaker teacher, here are the links you need:

Italian | Spanish | French | German

There’s no need to buy one to get one free, and you don’t have to provide credit card or payment details. Anyone who wants to try an online lesson, gets one for free!

Of course, the idea is that some of you will buy additional lesson credits and continue to learn this way. Others won’t, but that’s fine – hopefully those people will say nice things about us to people they know who are learning Italian, Spanish, French or German.

This offer is for new students only. The Free Trial Lesson offer is limited to one free online lesson per person.

Grab your free trial lesson:

Italian | Spanish | French | German

When we receive your order, our teaching management assistant will email you to find out what your needs and preferences are and WHEN you’d like to do your free lesson.

  • The Free Trial Online Lesson offer ends on Sunday 12/11/23
  • You don’t have to DO the lesson this week, just ‘book’ it
  • Around a hundred and twenty people have already signed up for a trial lesson, but there are around thirty slots still available
  • This offer is for NEW STUDENTS ONLY
  • If you booked a free trial last time but didn’t take it – try again!
  • But if you’ve already done a free trial in the past, sorry but this isn’t for you
  • Once you’ve completed your lesson, you’ll be sent a 15% discount coupon
